2022 By The Numbers

Back To Homepage

Same as 2020 and 2021, I tracked my mood at the end of every day in 2021 on a scale from one to five (awful -> bad -> neutral -> good -> rad). One 2022 goal was to have 156 rad days - this means work out, floss, stretch, and read on any given day - or 3 times per week, up from 109 days, or 2.1 times per week in 2021.

In 2021, I had 109 rad days (AKA worked out 109 days), 195 good days, 53 neutral days, 8 bad days, and 0 awful days.

In 2020, I had 107 rad days (aka worked out 107 days), 162 good days, 86 neutral days, 10 bad days, and 1 awful day.

2022 Reflections:

In 2022, I had 25 rad days, 257 good days, 76 neutral days, 5 bad days, and 1 awful day. I worked out 89 of those days, but the biggest was reading. I rarely read last year, which really affected my motivation to complete a rad day. Toward the end of the year, I decided to pivot away from this goal since I realized it didn’t matter that much to me. I changed it out with “getting 8 hours of sleep” instead, and I’ve been doing better at that; I find that knowing it’s a goal actually motivates me to sleep earlier (sometimes 🙂).

This was the first year I had sleep data from my Oura ring. On average, I went to sleep at 1am, was in bed for 8 hours, and slept for 7 hours. There is, at most, a very weak negative correlation with a later sleep time and a worse mood that day or the following day. Since this was only something I started tracking in earnest in late 2022 (even though I had the data since Jan-22), it’s something I’m going to try prioritizing more in 2023.

Favorite Things in 2022:

Surprisingly, 2022 was a year of a lot of “firsts”. First k-pop concert, first angel investment, first (two) music festivals, first golf clubs, etc. I look back on a lot of these events fondly and am glad I had these experiences. I guess I’m realizing that I like the adventure of doing something new for the first time.

In addition to the “firsts”, I think the major highlights were two weeks in Europe with Meesh and four weeks in New York with new friends. These trips were immersive and I was in a completely different state of mind when I was broken out of my routine at home.

Least Favorite Things in 2022

Failing my “rad days” goal is a bit disappointing, but I’m moving forward. Mid-year, I changed the goal post to swap out reading - which I ended up not caring about at all - to good sleep, which I care about moderately now. This was another year that general aches and lack of mobility really made me unsatisfied with myself. It’ll be a huge focus for me in 2023 to get myself in shape, mentally (discipline-wise) and physically.

Favorite travel memory

I keep coming back to being on top of a hill in Lisbon where Michelle and I had a few beers at the pop-up bar in Alfama Lisbon. It was very peaceful, and I thought it was just amazing. Its tied with another hill that trip, where I bought a bottle of champagne and we sat at the tallest point in Lisbon (part of my travel bucket list things to do in new cities).

In 2023, I’ll be trying again to have 156 rad days: stretching + working out + 8h of sleep + flossing. I’m glad to have logged more than 1,000 days on Daylio (my daily mood and activity tracker) and being able to look back on things. Here are a few other things I’ll be trying to do:

2023 Resolutions

Financial Goals: Review my asset allocation and then rebalance my portfolio accordingly. -30% in the market last year was not fun. I’m going to consider a higher % allocated to fixed income to reduce some volatility.

Relationship Goals: More consistent date nights 1x a week

Health Goals: Stretch and workout 3x a week, eat 2700 calories 3x a week until 155lb, keep my Calm subscription, meditate 1x a week during stretching

Travel Goals: I already have half a dozen trips planned in 2023 to meet up with friends, and I’m looking forward to more adventures to new places!

Fulfillment Goals:

  • Keeping up w/ friends across the country. Being proactive with outreach and keeping up with the day-to-day. Try for 1x every 2 weeks
  • More firsts. Be proactive with planning events, dates, and new things. Try for 1x every 2 weeks.
  • Sleep 8hrs a day 3x a week
  • Control the stimulus in my life like TikTok, video games, etc. Try ways to be more mindful; cold showers, meditations, mindfulness, etc.
  • Host more dinners. I love seeing my friends come together and mealtimes are a great way to do it. Plus, I’ve learned that I love cooking. 1x a month.

Just a few photos to commemorate the year:
