Same as 2020, I tracked my mood at the end of every day in 2021 on a scale from one to five (awful -> bad -> neutral -> good -> rad). One 2021 goal was to work out 130 days or 2.5 times per week, up from 107 days, or 2.0 times per week in 2020. Days could only be rad if I worked out.
In 2021, the numbers:
In 2021, I had 109 rad days (AKA worked out 109 days), 195 good days, 53 neutral days, 8 bad days, and 0 awful days. Thatās only 2.1 workouts per week vs. 2.5 which is disappointing but for good reason. I had a back injury in mid-September due to a bulging or herniated disc (they wouldnāt let me take an MRI to check!!) and was absolutely out of commission until the end of November (note the truly bad days in October). It was my first experience with back spasms and extreme rigidity, and Iād strongly recommend doing anything you can to avoid back problems. Personally, Iāve started a stretching routine (foam roll, cobra pose, downward dog, tennis ball rolling my foot to stretch my fascia) which I try to do every day. Looking back, itās really interesting to see that I could still have a āgood dayā even when I was in extreme pain some of those days.
In 2022, I will be raising the bar for what I consider a āradā day: stretching + working out + reading + flossing. This is a form of habit stacking (courtesy of James Clear), but rather than one after the other, habits within a day. Iāve spent the last 2 years logging my mood in Daylio, and keeping my rad days focused solely on fitness. Iām used to it now, and itās time to reach for more. My thinking is that stretching and flossing are easy and simple preventive health measures while working out and reading will actively improve my physical and mental health.
